Looters have stolen part of Ontario’s heritage, and their raids on an ancient Indian site have triggered calls for an effort by Fort Erie to protect archaeological treasures scattered throughout the township. Ronald Williamson of Toronto, a veteran archaeologist who has led excavations of an American burial ground from the War of near the old fort in recent years. Looters have left pits where ancient artifacts were stolen from a lakeshore site that might have been a village 1, years ago, he said.
Archaeologists, unable to explore the site themselves because of a lack of resources, have visited the site regularly through the years, including inspections of the nearby War of burial site in and as recently as last fall. The site west of Snake Hill was looted sometime in the last six months, Williamson said, but the thefts went undiscovered until the site was checked last week.
Some very major poaching and looting has been going on. He said Fort Erie needs an archaeological master plan — a set of guidelines for dealing with such finds as the burial site, which was discovered during basement excavations, and the Indian site, which has been known to archaeologists for years. As the scene of major War of fighting and long pre-European occupation by native peoples, Fort Erie is believed to contain several potentially significant sites.
Local lore also includes tales of development that, through the years, plowed such sites under. While Williamson said that a joint effort by the municipality and the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation will be sought to develop monitoring and protection plans, Mrozek said, the town has not yet been approached by provincial leaders. Williamson, still safeguarding the exact location of the site, said that the looted artifacts probably include stone tools, major pieces of ceramic vessels and perhaps even metal objects.
The objects, Williamson said, are scientifically worthless “sitting on a mantelpiece or on a shelf. Careful excavation of such sites, painstakingly noting the locations and relationships of the man-made artifacts to one another and to the general layout of the site, can yield information that allows experts to reconstruct the lifestyles of early inhabitants.
