New Forensic Dating Tool Combats “Blood Ivory”

Nearly 25 years after an international ban was placed on ivory, African elephants are being slaughtered at a rate that could bring about their extinction this century. By allowing the trade of ivory acquired before to continue, the ban put the burden on law enforcement to distinguish between legal ivory and poached. Now, a new method for dating elephant tusks, described in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , could make it easier to enforce the ivory ban and save the African elephant from extermination say researchers. The method might also be applied to endangered rhinoceroses and other wildlife. In the highly-regulated market for legal ivory, finding tusks for scientific research is not easy. In the lab, the researchers measured radiocarbon levels at the base of each tusk to independently calculate when the elephants died. Similar tests were done on monkey hair, hippo canines, oryx horn and elephant tail hairs to verify that the method worked across tissues of different ages.

Dating , in geology , determining a chronology or calendar of events in the history of Earth , using to a large degree the evidence of organic evolution in the sedimentary rocks accumulated through geologic time in marine and continental environments. To date past events, processes, formations, and fossil organisms, geologists employ a variety of techniques. These include some that establish a relative chronology in which occurrences can be placed in the correct sequence relative to one another or to some known succession of events.

Radiometric dating and certain other approaches are used to provide absolute chronologies in terms of years before the present. The two approaches are often complementary, as when a sequence of occurrences in one context can be correlated with an absolute chronlogy elsewhere. Local relationships on a single outcrop or archaeological site can often be interpreted to deduce the sequence in which the materials were assembled.

This then can be used to deduce the sequence of events and processes that took place or the history of that brief period of time as recorded in the rocks or soil. For example, the presence of recycled bricks at an archaeological site indicates the sequence in which the structures were built. Similarly, in geology, if distinctive granitic pebbles can be found in the sediment beside a similar granitic body, it can be inferred that the granite, after cooling, had been uplifted and eroded and therefore was not injected into the adjacent rock sequence.

Although with clever detective work many complex time sequences or relative ages can be deduced, the ability to show that objects at two separated sites were formed at the same time requires additional information. A coin, vessel, or other common artifact could link two archaeological sites, but the possibility of recycling would have to be considered.

It should be emphasized that linking sites together is essential if the nature of an ancient society is to be understood, as the information at a single location may be relatively insignificant by itself.

These detectors are used to date soils and sediments from salt marshes and lakes using radioactive isotopes caesium – Cs , lead – Pb and Lead – a mediator for Ra – Caesium – is a man-made radionuclide created by atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons and can be used to date sediments deposited since Lead – is a naturally occurring radionuclide that is part of the U decay series and can date sediments up to years old.

We have three upright well detectors which are suitable for samples with normal Pb concentrations. Our three J-shaped detectors are low background detectors which are ideal for samples with low Pb concentrations. One of these J-shaped detectors is equipped with a carbon fibre endcap, making it suitable for ultra-low background detection.

Radiocarbon dating. Introduction. The principles (simplified) behind this type of dating are the following: there are three isotopes of carbon, 12C, 13C and 14C.

All rights reserved. Professor Willard Libby, a chemist at the University of Chicago, first proposed the idea of radiocarbon dating in Three years later, Libby proved his hypothesis correct when he accurately dated a series of objects with already-known ages. Over time, carbon decays in predictable ways.

And with the help of radiocarbon dating, researchers can use that decay as a kind of clock that allows them to peer into the past and determine absolute dates for everything from wood to food, pollen, poop, and even dead animals and humans. While plants are alive, they take in carbon through photosynthesis. Humans and other animals ingest the carbon through plant-based foods or by eating other animals that eat plants.

Carbon is made up of three isotopes. The most abundant, carbon, remains stable in the atmosphere. On the other hand, carbon is radioactive and decays into nitrogen over time. Every 5, years, the radioactivity of carbon decays by half. That half-life is critical to radiocarbon dating. The less radioactivity a carbon isotope emits, the older it is.

Anthony Grafton, a Fellow of the American Academy since , is a professor of history and chair of the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University. He and his men had long since passed the boundaries of the space that Europeans had traditionally navigated. They did not and could not know exactly where they were. Still, they were confident that they knew one thing: when they had arrived. They inscribed the cross with a commemorative message, which dated their coming, with a precision that boggles the modern mind, to the year of the world To obtain this date they used a method as traditional as their exploits in navigation were radical.

The Greek text of the Old Testament, the Septuagint, and most Western world chronicles held that fifty-two hundred years had passed between the Creation and the Incarnation. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, as everyone knows, European explorers ranged the world and revolutionized — among many other things — the study of geography. They discovered unknown continents to the west and made contact with a vast range of societies in Africa and Asia as well as the Americas.

When Europeans had known only three continents — Asia, Europe, and Africa — they could easily trace the population of each of them back to one of the three sons of Noah. But from whom did the inhabitants of the Americas descend? Why had the Bible and the ancients not mentioned them? Or did they? Could the newly discovered land of Peru, with its gold mines, be the biblical Ophir that had supplied Solomon with his riches?

Dating techniques are procedures used by scientists to determine the age of rocks, fossils, or artifacts. Relative dating methods tell only if one sample is older or younger than another; absolute dating methods provide an approximate date in years. The latter have generally been available only since

Geochronology is the science of determining the age of rocks , fossils , and sediments using signatures inherent in the rocks themselves. Absolute geochronology can be accomplished through radioactive isotopes , whereas relative geochronology is provided by tools such as palaeomagnetism and stable isotope ratios. By combining multiple geochronological and biostratigraphic indicators the precision of the recovered age can be improved. Geochronology is different in application from biostratigraphy, which is the science of assigning sedimentary rocks to a known geological period via describing, cataloging and comparing fossil floral and faunal assemblages.

Biostratigraphy does not directly provide an absolute age determination of a rock, but merely places it within an interval of time at which that fossil assemblage is known to have coexisted. Both disciplines work together hand in hand, however, to the point where they share the same system of naming strata rock layers and the time spans utilized to classify sublayers within a stratum.

The science of geochronology is the prime tool used in the discipline of chronostratigraphy , which attempts to derive absolute age dates for all fossil assemblages and determine the geologic history of the Earth and extraterrestrial bodies. By measuring the amount of radioactive decay of a radioactive isotope with a known half-life , geologists can establish the absolute age of the parent material. A number of radioactive isotopes are used for this purpose, and depending on the rate of decay, are used for dating different geological periods.

More slowly decaying isotopes are useful for longer periods of time, but less accurate in absolute years. With the exception of the radiocarbon method , most of these techniques are actually based on measuring an increase in the abundance of a radiogenic isotope, which is the decay-product of the radioactive parent isotope. A series of related techniques for determining the age at which a geomorphic surface was created exposure dating , or at which formerly surficial materials were buried burial dating.

Exposure dating uses the concentration of exotic nuclides e. Burial dating uses the differential radioactive decay of 2 cosmogenic elements as a proxy for the age at which a sediment was screened by burial from further cosmic rays exposure.

Online dating was a great introduction to L.A. It didn’t take long for me to learn that there was something called “geographic desirability.”.

Interest in the origins of human populations and their migration routes has increased greatly in recent years. A critical aspect of tracing migration events is dating them. Inspired by the Geographic Population Structure model that can track mutations in DNA that are associated with geography, researchers have developed a new analytic method, the Time Population Structure TPS , that uses mutations to predict time in order to date the ancient DNA.

At this point, in its embryonic state, TPS has already shown that its results are very similar to those obtained with traditional radiocarbon dating. We found that the average difference between our age predictions on samples that existed up to 45, years ago, and those given by radiocarbon dating, was years. This study adds a powerful instrument to the growing toolkit of paleogeneticists that can contribute to our understanding of ancient cultures, most of which are currently known from archaeology and ancient literature,” says Dr Esposito.
